MEMBERSHIP

The following categories of users will be permitted to borrow:

    • Registered Students of the School of Education
    • School of Education Staff
    • Registered University Students
    • University Staff
    • Open Campus Students

 The following categories of users will be registered as eligible to use the library facilities for reading and reference:

    • UWI Alumni
    • Participants In Short Courses
    • External Users
    • Other persons requesting the use of the library for reading and reference purposes may be admitted according to their specific needs, and at the discretion of the librarian and/or external user policy.

All UWI undergraduate and postgraduate students must present a valid UWI identification card.

External users are required to pay a non-refundable fee of fifty dollars ($50.00) and will be allowed to use the library for a period of two weeks. Non-UWI tertiary institution and secondary students must present a letter from their institution stating that they are bona fide students. A limited number of students will be allowed to use the library at any given time.

External Users Reading/Reference

Loans

General Collection items are loaned for two (2) weeks to UWI students and one (1) month to Academic staff. Any item may be renewed for one (1) week providing that there are no requests for that particular item. In addition, an item can only be renewed once.

Reserve items are normally loaned for three (3) hours in the case of single copies, and in cases where there are multiple copies, three (3) days. Reserve items will not be renewed.

Items housed in the West Indian Collection cannot leave the library. However, specially selected items will be loaned for three (3) days.

School of Education’s Academic staff are allowed to borrow periodical items for one (1) week. All other patrons are only allowed reading and reference of periodical items.

The fines for late return of books from the General Collection is one dollar ($1.00) for each day the item is overdue. The fine for late return of materials from the reserve Collection is one dollar ($1.00) per hour during the library’s business hours. The fines levied above shall not exceed five hundred ($500.00) per item.

Users with fines of $1.00 or more are automatically blocked from borrowing.

Inter-Library Loans 

Research material that is not available from the library’s collection may be obtained from other libraries through an interlibrary loan facility. Materials are sourced from libraries nationally, regionally, and internationally.

To request an inter-library loan or copies of articles not available at the Library, patrons should complete the Interlibrary Loans/Document Delivery Request Form and return it to the Librarian.

Every attempt is made to obtain requested material as quickly and as inexpensively as possible. Students are not charged for materials borrowed through ILL/DD.

Requests

Items that are held by the library which are not available on the shelves can be obtained by completing a request slip. After placing, request, users should make periodic checks for request in the list of filled Requests, which is placed at the Circulation Desk. Users can also track their requests via UWI Student Email.

Overnight Book Deposit

A book return facility can be accessed from outside the Library. This facility is clearly marked “BOOK DEPOSIT” and is located at the Guard Booth. This facility can be used to return items on days when the library is closed.
